If you have scheduled your annual skin check, you may be left wondering what to expect, especially if it has been awhile since you last visited the dermatologist. Below you will find helpful information that will allow you to not only be better prepared for your skin check, but also help you get the most out of the time with your dermatologist.
- Come prepared: By completing regular skin exams at home and taking note of any problem areas, you can mention areas of concern to your dermatologist from the get go. Be sure to write down anything you wish to speak to the dermatologist about so that you do not forget. Additionally, removing nail polish from fingernails and toenails prior to the visit is extremely helpful. Thorough dermatologists will want to check your nails and nail beds for signs of skin cancer or other conditions.
- Be prepared to undress: During your annual skin check, your dermatologist will check your entire body. When you get in the exam room, you will be given a gown or drape to wear and asked to undress down to your undergarments. This will allow your dermatologist to thoroughly examine your body, all the way from your scalp to between your toes.
- Ask questions: If you have any concerns or questions about your skin, or how to properly perform a home skin check, feel free to ask your dermatologist. At Mt. Pleasant Dermatology, we feel that patient education is important and are always happy to explain information, answer questions, and more.
During the exam, if your dermatologist finds an area of suspicion, they may decide to take a biopsy of the area. A biopsy is performed by removing a layer of skin to examine more closely under a microscope. The process is quick and usually painless. Once the results come back, you may need to come back into the office for a follow up exam to remove the mole or growth as necessary. If a biopsy is needed, your dermatologist will walk you through the entire process.
