How to Hydrate and Care for Your Winter Skin

Bring Moisture into the Air

Heaters, cold temps, hot baths and glowing fires can all equal major moisture loss for our skin. To combat this, dermatologists recommend putting a cool-air humidifier in the room where you spend the most time. This will increase the moisture in the air thus helping skin to stay hydrated. You may also want to set your heater to a balmy 68 degrees which may also keep skin from becoming dry.

Moisturize Your Skin

Perhaps one of the most important and commonly overlooked steps in the dry skin game is changing to a hydrating moisturizer. Look for creams, especially those containing ceramides such as CeraVe and Aveeno Eczema Therapy for the body, rather than lotions. These should be applied to damp, not wet, skin immediately after bathing. This seals in the water the skin absorbs during bathing and keeps that water from evaporating. Drinking extra water has no benefit for dry skin. For patients with severe dry skin, pack on a hefty amount of product for day and night. For facial dry skin, SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore is an excellent option. Other great choices are Emollience and Epidermal Repair by SkinCeuticals or CeraVe, as an over- the- counter product. For dry, cracked lips try SkinCeuticals’ Antioxidant Lip Repair or Aquaphor.

Go for Gentle Cleansers

Our physicians at Mt Pleasant Dermatology recommend mild, hypoallergenic cleansers such as SkinCeuticals’ Gentle Cleanser, or mild cleansers from Cetaphil and CeraVe. These will remove the dirt and grime, but won’t strip away the moisture from the skin.

Go for Heavy Hitters

Many patients want to add a little kick to their winter skincare routine with a special treatment that packs a heavy punch. Try a CO2 Lift available at the SkinCeuticals Advanced Clinical Spa (located inside Mt Pleasant Dermatology). This relaxing masque hydrates and replenishes tired, aging skin with no-downtime. Studies show this particular masque increases skin hydration by 117%!
